Event Description :
The Other 98% is a grassroots network of citizens looking to end the corporate influence of federal government, now including MoveOn, Democracy for America, True Majority, Color of Change, The Nation magazine, US Action, People for the American Way, Public Citizen, & SEIU. This event is the beginning of a nationwide summer effort.
[We are] fed up with the status quo in Washington - seeking practical solutions to the many challenges facing America- standing against those bankers, CEOs and lobbyists who have hijacked our democracy to serve themselves at the expense of everyone else.
We need a massive new movement to kick corporate lobbyists out of DC, hold our elected officials accountable, and fix our democracy to make Washington work for the 98% of us who don't have corporate lobbyists. This summer, we will set our reform agenda -- the "Stand for Democracy" pledge, build support for this agenda in our communities, and organize a major advocacy campaign during the August Congressional Recess focused on members of Congress. The goal of this summer push is pressure our politicians to support our reform agenda, or to hold them accountable if they choose to stand with the corporate lobbyists rather than with their constituents.
